The fronds of the Canary Island Palm are feathery and impressive, growing up to 18 feet long. Each dark green frond is made up of 80-100 rows of leaflets, with the lower half of each stem covered in 2–3-inch spines. The fronds grow in an arching canopy of 40-50 leaves.
Canary Island Palms are often pruned to highlight their appearance. When trimmed, the bottom of the crown, or nut, resembles a pineapple, earning them the alternate name “Pineapple Palm.”
Flowers and Fruit
Small flowers bloom on branched stalks of the Canary Island Palm. The female flowers soon develop fruit that ranges in color from yellow-orange and brown to dark purple. These fruits are oval or round, about ½ inch in diameter, and contain a single large seed. They grow in clusters.
Although considered a type of date, the fruit is pulpy and fleshy, making it edible, but its flavor is not as enjoyable as other date varieties. The taste of the Canary Island Palm fruit is typically unpleasant.

Growing and Maintaining Your Canary Island Palm
The Canary Date Palm is propagated from seed and originates from the Canary Islands, traditionally thriving in Mediterranean climates with wet winters. It can also be cultivated in subtropical climates with wet summers or high humidity.
These palms grow best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. They prefer well-draining soil and require moderate watering. It’s important to note that they are slow-growing, typically reaching a maximum height of 50-60 feet and a spread of 15-20 feet.
Maintenance of the palm is relatively simple. Pruning dead leaves is necessary to maintain its shape and appearance. Proper pruning also helps create the distinctive pineapple-shaped nut at the base of the fronds.
