Medjool Date Palms

The Medjool Date Palm (scientific name Phoenix dactylifera, meaning “date bearing”) is known for its hardiness, grace, and beauty. The Medjool Date Palm gets its name from its fruit. It produces nutritious dates, which make these palms favorable for date lovers as well as palm tree enthusiasts.

Medjool Date Palms have silvery-green fronds and usually grow between 10 to 15 feet tall. Medjool Date Palms’ fronds are categorized as evergreen, staying green all year long. Fronds are usually 9 to 14 feet long, giving you a canopy of approximately 25 feet.

Medjool Date Palms’ fronds are heavier than the Deglet Date Palms, creating a wide, dense canopy.

Where Do Medjool Date Palms Thrive?

As the hardiest of all date palm varieties, the Medjool Date Palm thrives in regions ranging from California, Arizona, and Nevada to New Mexico, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and even as far east as South Carolina. Its remarkable saltwater tolerance makes it an ideal choice for coastal areas, including poolsides, homes, hotels, and beachside landscapes.

Medjool Date Palms are Perfect Landscaping Beauties

Medjool Date Palms are becoming increasingly popular in landscaping for their tropical aesthetic, adding a touch of elegance to both residential and commercial properties. These majestic palms are highly valued for their resilience and natural beauty, making them a top pick for creating a tropical atmosphere in any setting.

For those looking to elevate their property, we offer the option of our “Diamond Cut” service. Before delivery, the trunks of the palms are shaped with a diamond cut to enhance their visual appeal and add texture. Of course, you can also choose to leave your palms in their natural form.

With their stunning appearance, low maintenance, and ability to bring a touch of the tropics to any space, Medjool Date Palms are the perfect choice for enhancing the beauty of your property. Their tall, elegant stature and lush fronds make them a striking focal point, bringing long-lasting beauty and a sense of serenity to your landscape.

Foliage

The Medjool Date Palm’s leaflets are classified as evergreen monocots, keeping them lush and green throughout the year. The leaves typically grow between 13 to 20 feet long, with leaflets that form a “V” shape along the stem (also called the rachis), reaching about one to two feet in length. On average, each leaf contains around 150 leaflets.

The petiole, or stem that connects the leaf to the trunk, is considered “false” due to the presence of 3 to 4-inch thorns, which are actually modified leaflets. While commercial growers usually remove these spines during harvesting, it’s crucial to exercise extreme caution when handling this part of the palm.

Canopy & Spread

Medjool Date Palms have a larger and denser canopy compared to the Deglet Noor Palm, which has a more open and sparser canopy with fewer fronds.

After the initial establishment period, the Medjool’s canopy can expand to about 25 feet. Its striking silvery, blue-green fronds can grow up to 15 feet long and 2 feet wide, with the largest palms achieving a spread of up to 30 feet in diameter. As a result, landscape spreads can range from 25 to 40 feet. These fronds typically remain on the palm for three to seven years.

Maintenance

Medjool Date Palms are fairly low maintenance. At Wholesale Desert Palm, we suggest trimming your Medjool Date Palm annually, usually at the end of May. This yearly upkeep helps keep the palm healthy and prevents unwanted fruit from falling to the ground. Regular trimming also helps maintain the palm’s attractive appearance by removing dead or damaged fronds, promoting optimal growth, and reducing the risk of pest problems. Additionally, trimming encourages better air circulation around the tree.
